Report on disadvantages of contraceptive pills

Report on adverse use of contraceptive pills for the female students of Bhavna Trust Degree College, Recommendations

BACKGROUND:

On 28th June 2018, the Women Development Cell of Bhavna Trust College conducted a lecture on meaning and adverse use of contraceptive pills. The purpose of the lecture was to create awareness among the female students of our college. AS Coordinators of the event, we were instructed to submit a report by our principal Dr. Mrs. Anjali Karandikar mam.

A total of 70 female students were present on the day from BCOM, BMS, CS and IT.

The following things were focused on:-

  1. Since 1960’s the contraceptive pill had greater control over our bodies and fertility but this “freedom” may come at an enormous cost to woman’s health.
  2. Oral contraceptives pose health risks because it upsets natural hormone balance.
  3. There are high sugar levels, lack of sleep and stress.
  4. In the normal Menstrual cycle each month the levels of progesterone and estrogen fluctuate at different times in the cycle. i.e. estrogen peaks before ovulation and after that estrogen drops while progesterone peaks to ready the lining of the uterus for pregnancy.
  5. Birth Control Pills disrupt your body’s normal hormone production with synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone which suppresses ovulation , tricking your body into thinking it is pregnant all month.
  6. Birth Control Pill’s cause depletion of nutrients needed for healthy thyroid function.
  7. The girls using Birth Control Pills aged 15- 34 years go into depression.
  8. Birth Control Pills can increase breast cancer risk particularly women who take pill before they have children.
  9. Birth Control Pills compromise insulin sensitivity and hence cause weight gain.
  10. Women on pills face a drop in vitamin levels C & E as well as Bcomplex vitamins including B1,B2,B5,B6,B9,B12.
  11. There is higher risk of stroke and heart disease.
  12. Pill’s cause a drop in testosterone hence women find that their strength and ability to build muscles is compromised.

SUGGESTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

  1. Consider / Be familiar with menstrual cycle and signs of fertility by considering different methods of fertility tracking.
  2. Pills are particularly attractive contraceptive option for women who are happy to take a daily dose and in control of their own bodies.
  3. Most women don’t develop side effects. However a small number of women develop nausea, headache, sore breasts, mood changes, spotting between periods or irregular bleeding.
  4. Women above 35 yrs. should not take pill if they have history of heart attacks or strokes, blood clots, unexplained vaginal bleeding, known or suspected cancer or liver disease.
  5. The pill works by stopping an egg from being released each month from an ovary and forming a mucus plug so that sperm cannot get into the uterus to fertilize the egg. The pill also makes the lining of the uterus thinner which makes it unlikely that a fertilized egg will be able to attach the uterus.

Thus think twice before you act and protect yourself and your body from being ruined.
